Book Review: Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri

Unaccustomed Earth

Unaccustomed Earth is the third book by Jhumpa Lahiri and actually a second book of collection of short stories. This book is based upon Bengalis who have settled across oceans in the Americas, just like her earlier novel “The Namesake“. The novel revolves around the distances growing between relationships like father – daughter, brother – sister, husband – wife etc. The novel a collection of 8 short stories, the last three of which form a short novel is a beautifully written in splendid prose by Lahiri.

The title story “Unaccustomed Earth” is about a daughter Ruma whose widowed father visits her and she then realizes the distances between them, on how she had been close to her mother more than her father. She is somewhat confused by this and does not know how to handle this situation, and worries that the already fragile relationship should not cease. Despite this father helps himself at Ruma’s home, doing dishes after meals, plays with his grandson and sets up a garden for her. Ruma’s father who is retired from a pharmaceutical company, now frequently travels to Europe and other places. He gets back on his way that Ruma tries to stop him to stay back at her place; although she knows that she won’t be comfortable with her father’s presence. Ruma is now pregnant again, and has to manage with her husband’s salary. It’s on his way back that Ruma discovers that her father has now found a new reason to live and to travel.

Cheer leading the Indian way

The Indian Premier League is now undoubtedly the most celebrated cricket event of the year, it goes without saying that it has boosted the Indian cricket sense or the way the Indians view cricket. The IPL has its own share of “TRP raising moments” like the Slap gate controversy and the cheerleader’s ban, etc.

The Indian Premier League has exposed the Indian players who played in Ranji matches or U19s to the biggies of the world, allowing them to play in a team, share dressing rooms, learn skills and as a result of this we now have more talent like Goni, etc who have shown the metal to be in the mainstream side.

Cricket aside, I’m here to talk about the cheerleaders. Yea, the very same whom you watch with your eyes stuck to the television even in a low scoring game. No, I am not here to say that some politician again slapped a ban on them. A small thought though, why don’t we cheer our players the Indian way? Lemme explain, the Mumbai Indians can hire some Indian dancers to dance to the beats of a typical Marathi Lavani song (or any other Marathi Folk dance form) when their player scores a four or takes a wicket. When they wear traditional 9 meter saris rather than 9 inches skirt I bet no moral police shall raise their voice. The same can be emulated across teams. The Rajasthan Royals can have their lovely Rajasthani folk dance, while the Punjab XI can do a Bhangra, like wise for others. You have this kind of cheer leading then you can also promote the local folk music rather than importing these blondes and making them to dance to Himesh Reshammiya tracks. Now that you are spending millions, why not on this. I bet no politicians shall think of banning this. Neither will Mandira Bedi have to say that shee doesn’t like cameras focusing on the girls skirts, dunno how she felt while the cameras were on her when raged the screens with her controversial saris on Extraa Innings.

Give it a thought folks. Listening Mr. Lalit Modi ?

Viewpoint: India and Tata Nano.

Days after the big launch of the much awaited small car, the Tata Nano the debate continues on its implications on Indian economy and the infrastructure. I know this post comes a bit late, but so what keep reading. Many argue that the car is going to slow down India in its Economical growth, even noted Journalists like Thomas L Friedman, of the NY Times asking not to follow American footprints. Dr. Pachauri, who had sleepless nights on the car, adds that the car is not the transport solution for India. It was never intended to be.

To begin with, Tata Nano does make a car’s dream for many Indian’s come true. Many of them who had a two wheeler as the only mode of transport would like to upgrade to this one. The implication of this as envisaged by Dr Pachauri is that it would rather add to the no of vehicles on the street rather not hitting the Indian bike market. Definitely, I would agree to some extent on that. A car can never replace a bike. The average Indian buyer would still like to own the bike, while adding the car.

Some thoughts on the Indo-US 123 Agreement

Some define this agreement as the practical solution which meets all our requirements, while some say that the deal is one sided as it is bounded by the Hyde Act of the US. The 123 Agreement or precisely to be called as the “Agreement for cooperation between the Government of India and the Government of United States of America concerning peaceful uses of nuclear energy has evoked more controversies ever since Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and US President George Bush made the joint statement on India-U.S. cooperation in nuclear, space and other issues.

So I was inquisitive on knowing what exactly are the controversial statements or clauses in the Agreement that has had the Left and the BJP oppose it? What has in it that many in the international community are concerned? I actually got a good picture of the debate surrounding the deal from Frontline but this article from India Today, in short describes all the aspects of the deal.

To begin with, what are the major concerns surrounding the deal? What issues need to be clarified? This article in the Frontline reports a following issues that forms the topic of controversy, which you can read out here.

Munnabhai to have more of Gandhigiri

And this time its not some Chemical Locha, Sanjay Dutt who has been convicted under the Arms Act and was held in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai shall be moved to the Yerawada Jail in Pune. And for all those Sanjat Dutt Fans who say that he would be missed for his Gandhigiri action as depicted in his last flick, here some trivia that I learned from Times of India. Read this excerpt.

The Gandhi connect re-appeared in Munnabhai’s life as Sanjay Dutt was moved on Thursday from Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail to Yerawada jail — Mahatma Gandhi was incarcerated there for six years from 1922.

And more to add,

At Yerawada, Dutt is sure to find a lot of Gandhigiri. For five years, rights activist Asim Sarode has been conducting a programme to inculcate Gandhian principles among inmates of the prison where Gandhi has a barrack named after him.

Gandhi spent most of his time there translating works of Marathi saints and fasting.

Bajaj and Renault up for a Low Cost Car

I don’t really know why everyone’s cashing in on a small car in India. This would really change the dynamics, of Indian Automobile Industry. True indeed in nature, that once everyone offers a small, cheap car the company expects to see sales and profit figures flying. But do we actually need it? Or is the present Indian Infrastructure ready to handle such tremendous increase in car traffic.

Well, for the title news, Renault is apparently in talks with Bajaj Auto, for a cheap car at $3k which would be around 1.2 lakh rupees. The French car maker had first approached M & M, who reportedly were not inclined for a small car because it does not fit into M&M’s scheme of things in the long run, and thus Renault approached Bajaj Auto. Read this TOI report excerpt.

Namesake Candidate

Yes Folks, The United National Progressive Alliance have reportedly fielded a tainted candidate, for the Vice President’s Post.

The Central Bureau of Investigation is investigating an allegation that Rasheed Masood, the United National Progressive Alliance’s candidate for the Vice President’s post, wrongly helped a man in getting admission in a medical college.
Masood was Union Minister of State for Health in the V P Singh government when he allegedly helped a certain Pawar Sandeep Trilok Chand in getting admission into Lucknow’s King George Medical College. Chand did not write the entrance test.

Now will someone tell these politicos, on how to choose candidates for such an important post? The President’s post has already been dragged into politics, so why spare this. Why do political parties or alliances field candidates just to make presence, and divide the votes.

police diary

Interesting to read this and it didn’t surprise me too. Right from the time since Dr Haneef’s name has been floating in the terror Plot case, and after reading about his credentials as a good, educated Indian citizen, I believed that he wouldn’t be guilty.

So here I got some more info on the case. The Aussie cops, apparently messed around with the Doctor’s diary, to nail him in the case. First of all, is that the way you handle evidences in a case? So for the story, as I have read on, Dr. Haneef’s diary was filled with the suspects names by the Aussie cops, and the controversy surfaced later during the interrogations by AFP’s counter-terrorism force.

YSR’s new low

YSRTune in to any news channel today, and you would find this. The Andhra Pradesh CM, Y S Reddy, has hit a new low by using abusive language in the assembly.

YSR as he is known went out on Chandrababu Naidu, the Leader of Opposition who apparently questioned him on mining contracts in the state.

This report has the translated version. I don’t want to quote the comment out here on Mutiny.

YSR insulted Naidu’s lineage, after the latter accused the Congress-led government of favouring a BJP-MLA in awarding mining contracts. Reddy was trying to make a statement when TDP members started shouting, interrupting him mid-way.

Now, it doesn’t matter if you are questioning mining or something else, but what has come to limelight is the lows our politicians are getting down to. It is not a new thing to us, who have seen all things fly in the assembly, from microphones to chairs, way back in UP, and recently in Karnataka wherein a leader went out to physically abuse another leader.
