The Drivel of India

There was a time when I loved “The Times of India”.

In the late 90’s when coloured printing was introduced and the invitation price of Re.1, Deccan Herald & Indian Express had finally got competition in Bangalore.

The light hearted Bangalore Times was a welcome change from the heavy reading of the Hindu. And people lapped it up.

Looks like Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. have taken to this image way too seriously. Although I do not get to read their print edition and have to make do with the online edition these days, something tells me that I am not missing much.

I was reading the online version yesterday and spotted this survey which asked women whether they like their male partners to wear a bra.

OK – valid question but totally warranted. In fact, this is just one of the few instances of garbage I have come across in what is known to be the largest selling newspaper in India.

If you don’t believe me, read this. Today’s edition’s top stories are “Archie, Betty, Veronica follow Bollywood formula”, “KJo was right to apologise to Raj: Hansal Mehta” and “Sperm, grapefruit slow ageing”.

“KJo” wanting to aplologise to Raj Thackerey is top news??? Give me a break! None of the above actually is.

And read this.…“Would like to see Rahul Gandhi as PM: Jaya Prada”. Since when did Jaya Prada’s opinion about the prospective PM gain such importance? Doesn’t other news like the flood situation in AP and Karnataka have more importance than Jaya Prada’s view on who would be PM, that too AFTER 5 years.

Well, TOI better get their act right sooner than later. Otherwise this newspaper is going to be as worthless as used toilet paper very soon.

the point is correct but the illustrations are not justified…. in particular, ‘KJo was right to apologise to Raj: Hansal Mehta’ was an important article because Hansal Mehta was going lead a peace march to Raj Thackeray’s house in order to protest his politics. Jaya Prada, like it or not, is an important MP of the Samajwadi Party.. however, as the other examples bear you out.. times of india has always been crap and will continue to be so..it will also remain extremely profitable.

TOI is a complete entertainment, it brings a wide variety of soft porn to your desk, different stories that tickle you and events like where did SRK pee, Amithabh puke and the ‘geography’ of Sherlyn Chopra.. and a lot.

Before opening TOI at office, i just look around. I do not want to be caught watching porn pics, though my intention was to read some legible news.

Recently they changed the layout to cope up with IHT.com, telegraph.com etc, but it was just the layout not the quality of the news. After all they just need “hits”.

Jug Suraiya in his TOI column Jugular vein had once suggested 101 uses for that venerated paper. If I remember correctly, Including, use as toilet paper. And, point to be noted, excluding, READING that paper for news. So, see, TOI is aware of the facts and is proud of them too. It did publish the column.
@JJ: OT but Sherlyn Chopra’s ‘Geography’, apparently is missing a vital part - her brain. As witnessed in that TOIsh show Biggg Bossss.

LOL… TOI has been the equivalent of TOIlet paper for some years now… and their web site is the online version. Like J.J said, soft porn to your desktop, with daily T & A show(s) and a total lack of any insightful articles.

@w.t.f.ittabari I’m sure Jaya Prada must be blushing at being mentioned as an important member of the SP :) and about TOI being extremely profitable.. i recall reading somewhere that the entire group is bleeding heavily..
