Fiona Zuzartee is Miss MalaysiaIndian

Fiona Zuzartee, who thinks beauty contests are for empowering women, is the new Miss MalaysiaIndian Global.

She won the contest Sunday while medical student Sowmya Krishnan and business management student R. Gayathri were the first and the second runners up, The New Straits Times reported.

Fiona took part in the Miss MalaysiaIndian Global pageant because according to her it is a “beauty contest” with a difference.

“It had no bearing on beauty. Rather, it was about empowering women,” said the 20-year-old who beat 16 other contestants to become the Miss MalaysiaIndian Global 2008.

Zuzartee, who aspires to be a pilot, said she did not expect to win the contest at all. It was organised by a non-profit organisation Miss MalaysiaIndia Care Association.

A product of mixed parentage - her mother an Indian and father a Portuguese - Zuzartee said she was elated. She won RM 10,000 ($4,540) worth of jewellery and Persian carpets.

Zuzartee holds an international hotel and tourism management degree from Kolej Da-mansara Utama.
