A half-Muslim’s view on how Muslims should be percieved
I’m half-Muslim. The other half is Hindu. While there were no overt attempts in the house to make me choose between either religion, there was exposure to both. Outside of the home, you didn’t meet many Muslims and therefore the exposure outside the home was primarily Hindu. And thankfully we grew up celebrating all festivals in the house, and had Christian teachers in school, so there was an ample dose of Christianity thrown in.
I was raised by my Mother on Amar Chitra Kathas. (Uncle Pai therefore shares some of the blame for how I’ve turned out.) I read comics on Jesus Christ, Rama, Krishna, Hanuman, Buddha, Mahavir Jain, Guru Nanak, Kabir, Agastya, Ghatotkach and a truckload on Hindu mythology. I read loads about India’s history, her invasions, her home grown kings, and Amar Chitra Kathas always presented an unbiased, usually positive viewpoint, the kind that kids should be exposed to.
I grew up accustomed to people marvelling at my knowledge of “Hindu” mythology, and other religions. I also grew up practically unaware of what Islam was about. Since my family didn’t pay much attention to it, I was only aware of who the “heroes” of Islam were: The Prophet, Hazrat Ali & his martyred sons Imam Hasan & Imam Husain, and their clan.
As I grew older, I met more Muslims, relatives who didn’t have the advantage of a Western education, who were amazed at how little I knew about Islam. They tried to impress upon me, how good the religion was, what it said etc. Unfortunately, I was in my teens & rebellious, saying emphatic NO’s to everything. Also, these people were not exactly the best of teachers.
Thankfully my Grandfather was an erudite, liberal scholar. And his daughter, my Mother had learnt her Islam from him. So she chose to teach me about the progressiveness of Islam. I found that my Grandfather’s interpretations of the religion were radically different from what the common Muslim knew & believed. My Mother taught me all about the history of the region where the religion originated and linked it to why certain things were expressed in a certain way in Islam. It made much more sense that way. Simple things like this: Islam considers Moses an earlier Prophet of Islam and his teachings are incorporated in the Quran. So “Thou shalt not kill” is an integral part of Islam.
The damage however had been done by then. I knew my family was different, but the image of the common Muslim in my mind was this: They’re Islam obsessed. All they seemed to talk about was religion. If ever another topic came up, the answers were sought in Islam. And that bothered me. Until I realized that all over the World, people seek answers & direction from their religion. Why then did it seem to me that Muslims were more religions focused than other religious groups? That is something I am looking for an answer to.
With all the World attention on Islam & all the hate that spews out in blog forums & on the roads sometimes against it, I’ve been wondering if there is anything Muslims can do to clear the air. Here are some of the things that I think Muslims should/should not do:
- Educated, liberal Muslims should use media to clear the air about what the religion stands for. It should showcase the lives of Muslims like themselves using TV, papers, novels, films whatever i available. The common non-Muslim deserves to know what Islam really stands for. They must undo the damage that the conservatives have caused. A PR exercise is desperately needed.
- Muslim majority countries like Iran should lay off minorities like the Bahais. Educated Muslims should actively condemn Iran when it does something like this. Countries like Saudi Arabia should allow freedom of religious expression in their countries. Unless they’re content to be knows as a hardline, conservative state. I as an educated, liberal, half-Muslim would be the first to condemn religious states!
- The Shia-Sunni divide needs to be bridged. This is easier said than done, but if the differences are irreconcilable, they should at least lay off each other. And guys like zakir naik should be condemned publicly if they mouth any hate.
Notice that I am not just saying “educated”. I am saying “educated, liberal”. There is a difference and that is the section in whose hands the image of Muslims worldwide lies today.
- The media doesn’t seem to be helping on it’s own. So there should be an active involvement with the media, a partnership that showcases the attitudes of people like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Farooque Shaikh, the bin laden niece who made a magazine cover in America. People like Dinara Safina, Marat Safin, Sania Mirza & their parents.
I intend to do my two bits. This way while I can & more if I can later.
My mini-mission going forward is to impress upon each uber-conservative Muslim I come across, the importance of being as modern & liberal. And how it’s important for their community to come across as that, if they’re to contribute to solving the problems that face them today. I’m aware that most of them will take it as personal criticism & will react just the way I did as a teenager, but I must sow the seeds of the idea in their mind.
If you agree dear readers, please help me do the same. Please speak to every hardliner you come across & tell them to live their life as they would like their religion to be perceived. If they want to be viewed as progressive, educated, liberal, loving & peaceful, then they must be that themselves. Do spread the good word.

Wonderful thought, but as you rightly said easier said than done…
World would be a wonderful place if people start thinking in the positive direction.. unfortunately to be able to erase and re-write the prespective isn;t a easy job.
About Sihas and Sunnies, I guess that is something which is there across all religions, only thing in Muslims it is just 2 major groups that makes it look much bigger.

Actually the divide is pretty strong everywhere. We’ve just forgotten about the persecution of the early Protestants by the Catholics. The don’t fight anymore and that’s something that Muslims need to learn from them.
I even heard about Vaishnavite-Shaivite wars! Caste wars still exist within Hinduism. They’re all the same basically.
But we must try & talk sense to whoever we meet. We must not sit quiet.

1con..I really appreciate your efforts. For once I think you are a man with a mission. I saw the hate comments against Muslims (terrorists) in another forum where you were trying to bring out the hooliganism of the sangh and its relatives. I also saw a comment which spoke of how muslims celebrated in some gullies when Pakistan won against India.
And therefore I think your post makes a lot of sense.
I will try my best to spread the word man. Most of my best friends are Muslims and I have not known more loving souls. And hence I certainly don’t agree to the generalisation of Muslims as the problem child of India/any country.
Easier said than done, but let’s try.

First problem that I foresee is “Who is the real muslim”? Shabana Azmi when she speaks about Islam or the bearded gentleman who dismisses Shabana as a “NachneWali” with no understanding of islam. I would like to know your and other mulsims opinion on this.

I asked him on another thread as to why his mother had to be converted to Islam not vice versa since he has a Muslim name but he did not answer that.
He claims to be a liberal Muslim but does not explain his views about Salman Rushdie’s book based on facts and why it is still banned in India.
Why did he not include Sir Rushdie’s name along with Ustad Amzad Ali et al? Has he read it and if yes then what did he find untrue?

My Muslim Mother allowed me to marry a Hindu girl.
My Hindu wife was not forced to convert to anything & continues to visit temples where I also tag along sometimes.

First of all. In Islam you can’t marry a Hindu lady If you are a Muslim man. So it either has to be that your father does not follow Islam or that the marriage is void.
Second, meh. Just because you studied in Christian schools does not mean you have been exposed to the faith amply. As for Naik, I did not witness him bad mouth anyone in public but you seem to have enough theoretical ideologies to support up your claims.
Third. You can either be a Muslim as a whole. Or a Hindu. You can’t carry the banner of three faiths with a pride you have no right to.
As for the rest who are reading this, brush up your knowledge on other religions or keep your blabbering to your personal diaries. No one on the internet has got enough time to even scan through the lameness you all depict.

You are right about Moses being considered a Prophet, unfortunately this is very demeaning to Jews. It mentions that Moses was an earlier prophet and all that he said can be overruled by Mohd. (PBUH). Therefore whatever Mohd. said on Jewish matters is the final word. Also Jews are given second class status in Sharia and Hindus have no status(check Saudi Arabia’s laws).
So “Thou shalt not kill” is an integral part of Islam.”
Correct again! However in later chapters of the Quran there are too many verses which say that only a person who accepts Islam should be spared.
– So how do we resolve this contradiction? That is quite simple, Mohd (PBUH) has told that in case of a contradiction, the later commands are correct, i.e. non Muslims can be killed. Ask your grandpa about this and correct me if I’m wrong.
1con, why don’t you take the time to read both Quran and Hadith before coming here and talking. You’ll convince no one.

I would disagree to this article in following points :
1. When a religious book is an answer to the problems in your life, why shouldn’t one look to it ? The book answers most of the major problems we face day-to-day.
2. Before everybody post their comments on Islam, kindly take time to read the book first. Don’t judge Islam with its followers. Read Quran as any novel and understand what it has to say.
3. Don’t give your comments based on what you read in media.You all are educated, just take sometime to go through the book.
4. Zakir Naik is a good orator and knowledgeable person in areas related to spirituality and religion. Listen to his talks, they are logical and if you don’t agree with him, go to his live shows and show where you disagree and he will have an answer for you. Don’t bias people with your articles.
Few more observations:
5. Why are we half-knowledgeable about Quran and its teachings ? Why shouldn’t we do a research on it as we do on political things ?
6. Again, the foremost important thing is humanity and religion comes later. Killing of an innocent person is killing the whole humanity - verse derived from Quran.
I would ask ppl. of all faith to read all books of faith and take one which you think is more logical. Why are we upto showing dominance of one religion over another ? But before you take any religion, make sure u knw the fundamentals and have read the books of all religions. In India, most of the people don’t know what their books teach and am from India. We don’t read Vedas carefully nor Quran. If we even take the intersection of these books, life would have been really peaceful.

Therefore your utterings on how Jews enjoy second class citizenship in Islam is pure balderdash! Nothing that Moses said is superseded. The Quran supplements what Moses, Jesus etc said!
The killing of non-believers needs to be examined in detail, which I will be happy to explain to you; but not here. Here I will only present a summary.
In those days, the non-believers were members of the Quraysh that were opposing Mohammad, worrying his followers, persecuting them etc. When there was no way out but to fight a war with them, then the Prophet gave the battle go-ahead. It is these people (& similar ones) that are referred to as the non-believers. I hope that makes things clearer for you.
My Grandpa passed away in 2004, otherwise you’d not have a word to say here.

For all brothers and sisters, Quran no where says that one should kill a kafir etc. Everything is cooked up. For your proof, here is the link to soft copy of Quran : http://www.quranexplorer.com .
All athiests and non-muslims quote the verses and let me give you the chapter as well. The chapter is 9-Surah Al-Tawba. You go through for yourself and decide. We shouldn’t act like blind followers, we should use our hikmah and wisdom. If you read the chapter well, there was a peace treaty which was broken by disbelievers and thus, there was a fight.

I did check out his video regarding yazid, and he did say sorry about hurting the emotions of many muslims. We should not raise -ve popularity against him for one such speech. Check out his other videos, he has commendable speeches as well. We shouldn’t malign anyone’s image for a mistake. He has given many good speeches and this one was a mistake. I understand you might be hurt because of that, but we should understand even he is human and is bound to make mistakes.

Some of muslims like imams, saints, philosphers (Zakir naik), are so powerful .
Why they don’t criticize recent bomb blasts. Had it been a hindu, u would have pointed to whole hindu. Even you also never condemend recent blasts.

Please be respectful, I have read many posts across the internet people whom choose to promote hatred towards Islam, and it’s the first time I have chose to reply, to the young person who wrote the piece, you are living proof as to why Allah says to Muslim women, DO NOT MARRY NON-MUSLIM MEN, your marriage is not accepted. Why is it that this young person is not questioning Hinduism? You speak of the media?..helping….?? Ask yourself who is controlling the media you see? you speak of the world all of a sudden paying attention to Islam….paying attention do you mean? or using as a scape goat? I think you have a lot of research to do before you write something like this and you say you have read so many of these books about Hindu mythology, but have you ever picked up and actually read an english translation of the holy Quran? you seem only to have vague knowledge of some of the ways of Islam, you want to show the importance of being modern and liberal, how? and as for your comment about how they come across as a community, go back and reread my comment about he Media, why do you think they come across that way? people do not just get up in the morning and say..I want non-muslims to think negatively of me and not accept me as modern or liberal….by the way Hinduism is modern or liberal how? not to attack it, it’s just that your subtly attacking my beliefs how can I not say anything. I think Muslims overall have excellent manners. From their respectful adabs/salaams to their loving & caring Khuda Hafizes. From the cultured, soft & gentle Urdu that they speak in the North to the flawless English that my cousins speak.

I am not going to condemn a man for making one mistake if everything else he says makes sense and is utterly true. Don’t throw the baby away with the bath water. The reason people are so emotional about Islam is like if you know a universal truth and no one else wants to believe you because it does not suit their interests you too would be emotional if that happened. And yes I know there are many mini-skirted muslim women as you say but you forgot what Dr. Naik said, mini-skirted Muslim women are not half as bad as those Muslim cricket players who do not even Pray to God. Wearing a mini-skirt does not make someone modern, even the use of the word modern makes me laugh because it has a million and one different meanings for every person haha like the word..”Democracy” Everyone uses these meaningless words to add meaning to their arguments that are truly void of any meaning…and what exactly are you two trying to prove? what is the basis for your never ending argument?you both seem to hate Islam despite the fact that neither of you seem to have done your research on it….

The thing is that like in recent bomb blasts. People from both community has died. The thing is people from their community has to come.
Fisrt thing in religion is worshipping. There is freedom that hs to be given.
After coming from temple, masjid or church. One should not have hatred for other religion.
They should ask , the all merciful Bhagwan/ Allah has created some souls because of his compassion. Killing them means not respecting the Almighty.
But unfortunately this hasn’t happened.

Digression - why mr naik is a moron - well he says that non muslims can not build temples in saudi (muslim lands) BECAUSE muslims KNOW that their faith is correct. When it comes to other things (like science where west is better than muslims), muslims allow west to teach them, but when it comes to religion, muslims KNOW!!!

You cannot be a half muslim you dim wit! Either you are a muslim or you are not. Muslim is not a breed or a race. You do not know even the meaning or origin of the word muslim. Before you start your investigation about muslims I suggest you first investigate what is a muslim and what is the meaning of muslim. To label yourself as half muslim just shows your ignorance.
