It’s fair and responsible
Although I have a feeling that the Congress government was waiting for the Karnataka election to get over to make this move, it’s a timely and responsible move. The decision has been expected for the last few days, as the oil companies were incurring huge losses on account of controlled fuel prices. The price of petrol was increased by rupees, and diesel prices by 3 rupees.
Did you know that most liquids that you daily use are more expensive than vehicle fuels?
The government had raised fuel prices on February 14, when oil price was hovering around $95 per barrel internationally, but the government has withheld any hike since then, even though world oil prices are near $124 per barrel today (at times even above $135!)
Oil companies, Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, have so far reported losses of over 2.25 trillion rupees, in absence of upward revision in retail prices despite soaring international crude oil prices.
The government for it’s part also slashed customs duty on crude oil to zero from the earlier 5 percent and cut the excise duty on petrol and diesel by 1 rupee a litre.
The Left and BJP will try to make political mileage out of this. It’s irresponsible. I feel this decision was taken in the best interest of the country.

i completely agree with u…with the increasing population and the scarce natural resources this was expected….moreover, its not jus our country but the developed countries like USA also who are facing the same problem.
ther is no point blaming a single government of ours when the problem is global.
moreover, people too have to play their part in reducing the usage….well….govt is doin wat best it can…hope fr the best

I agree, there is no point in blaming the central goverment for the hike, its the state government who should act and try reduce the burden on the people. Like in Bangalore the oil price is the highest in India (58.78/litre), while all the other cities pay way less. and kerala? its observing a hartal today, declared by BJP (they rule Karnataka which has the highest price) and left (who are ruling kerala now as well as the centre).
Thats what I call double standards or politics. !

I agree. Fuel prices in Europe stand at approx Rs. 68/- a litre.
There is no reason for us not to shell out more money for what is more expensive.
If anything, it’ll make people think again before blowing up fuel like it was water!
As for the politics, it’s best ignored. The opposition would’ve had to do the same thing had they been in power, but for now it’s an opportunity for them.
To demonstrate their pettyness & hypocrisy to us.

Totally agree, chacko. Sucked to see the lefts and especially BJPs comments in the newspapers this morning that criticized the move to raise fuel prices. Seriously, Oil companies had already started rationing fuel.
Did the left want the govt to wait until fuel reserves ran out and the nation came to a complete and utter stand-still, then turn to an anarchy followed by a communist-marxist-maoist revolution type civil war promising to bring peace and order and one party dictatorship for the next century?

@1conoclast, you said: As for the politics, it’s best ignored. The opposition would’ve had to do the same thing had they been in power, but for now it’s an opportunity for them. To demonstrate their petty-ness & hypocrisy to us.”
You don’t know communists, man! had they been in power, they’d not have raised prices a single penny.
Probably would’ve passed an order to arrest people who drive a car between 5 AM and 5PM at the same time keeping the public under an illusion that the only reason they are happy is them.

@xylene : “hartal” is only a worldwide communist ajenda before getting into power. check your history books. They’ll do hartals over the pettiest of issues. It’s their way of showing an illusory notion people that a communist government is the only gateway to an atheist’s heaven.
