Bollywood movies for free? Really?

I know I’m going to make a lot of enemies with this post but not anymore from Bhutan, I hope!

Last evening, when I reached home, my wife and sister where watching Taare Zameen Par on the laptop. ‘Wow’, I thought to myself. As a family we seem to be progressing technologically. The excitement didn’t last long. The picture quality was really bad.

‘Are we paying for this?’

‘No, it’s all free!’

They were using this site, Videoduniya.com. A website run by someone in California, US (according to who.is). The website claims, ‘We don’t host any of the videos that are available on this website. We just link them from popular sources on the internet like youtube and google videos . These videos are uploaded to those sources by the community at large and not by us.’

What ‘community at large’? Who gains by piracy? Especially of this quality? If we want our entertainment industry to grow and want people to respect it - it has to start with us. No one in my house will be visiting videoduniya.com.

I’m sure a day will come when the movies we want to watch will be offered to us online legaly in good quality (like itunes) - there is a lot of money to be made from it legally. I’m sure whoever is behind videoduniya.com is making a lot of money from Google Adsense (most of the videos are hosted in Google Videos) - but how does that serve the ‘community at large’? I’m sure we all like the idea of watching new movies for free -but the price we pay in helping these pirates is greater in the long run.

    Hi Chacko,

i completly agree with your views. We need to take a stand whether we would like to support our entertainment media or support videoduniya…..

Video duniya? They show poor quality videos hw abt torrent sites like desi torrents? and there are special torrent sites dedicated for regional films like keralam360.com.. what abt them! With the existing set of laws there is no way we can curb piracy!

Balu, being an NRI myself. I too carve for some Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi movies. But I don’t do piracy. I will order the CD online from an Indian store and it delivered to my house.

Piracy is the easy option but being responsibe pays back in the long run.

I agree about piracy being bad.. but what if the movie is not available for purchase.. I tried to buy Vanaprastham online couldn’t find any and had to revert to downloading! I regret it but I had no option.. The blame is on the distributers who do not realise the potential of selling movies online.. the initiative by moserbaer to sell movies at throw away prices are showing results (I recently bought 6 movies :-) )

cinema theatres overcharge for movies @ 150 bucks a ticket its overpriced. the only option is to watch it on pirated DVD. 12$ for a movie is way above the price in Singapore, normal english movies are sold at 8-10SGD so the option again is piracy.

piracy is good, it will break the back of overcharging exhibitors and those who have rights.

@vatsan - Wrong. Piracy is illegal and there are no two ways about it. You said the ‘only option is piracy.’ There’s another option as well.

    Stop watching.

I agree, downloading must be avoided as much as possible (and I’ve been guilty of this in the past). My policy of late is to buy the OST from the store - if I can’t find it, or it’s a rare-song, I’m forced to get an mp3.

But no downloads anymore for movies. Last week I attended a film-making workshop where we spent over 14 hours to shoot a one minute film. After putting in that kind of effort and understanding what goes into making a film, I won’t be able to download movies anyway.
