Rocking Indian Female Bloggers
One of my co workers is a big fan of reading popular blogs. He is not a blogger and has no intention of starting one any time soon but he loves talking about how his GPRS phone lets him read blogs on way to work and how he’s always the first one to comment on Scoble’s blog and how he knows everything about the Consumer Electronics Show courtesy all the top blogs he refers. He is amazed that there are every few female bloggers, more so less from India.
Now make no mistake, he is what we call a top forty junky. People who know nothing, generally feel he knows a lot, but people who blog would know that he knows nothing. This article is strictly meant for consumption of those people who are like my co worker. Heres a list of some rocking female bloggers from India, whom I have subscribed in my feed reader. The list is a short one, all due to my lack of knowledge. Feel free to comment away on more rocking female bloggers from India you know.
Kamla Bhatt (http://kamlabhattshow.com/) After spending 10 years working in various IT companies in Silicon Valley, California, Kamla Bhatt turned to her true passion: radio. In March 2006 she launched her new radio show called The Kamla Bhatt Show. Some of the people that have featured include Director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, Kal Penn, Shyam Benegal, A.R. Rehana, Kittu Kolluri, Ira Pande and others. She is the only female tech blogger from India that I know. Being someone who is involved in a startup, I have personally found her blog/shows extremely useful and informative. Watch out for her interview on Mutiny. Incidentally she is going to be on TV talking about blogs on NDTV with Barkha Dutt on Sunday, 13th Jan 8 PM.
Anita Bora (http://anitabora.com/blog/) is predominantly a “travel and living” blogger. Her photographs on travel, nature and wildlife are damn cool. Its a great fun to read her travel blogs that are always filled with some very nice pictures.
Dina Mehta (http://dinamehta.com/) has been on the blogosphere since Mar 2003, thats almost five years now. For a long time she wrote on a radio weblog here. She also has one of the largest blogrolls I have encountered, a decent clue to suggest that one needs to read good stuff in good quantity to write well. She mostly writes about current affairs and Indian culture.
Nita (http://nitawriter.wordpress.com/) A fellow mutineer whose wide angle view of India is a pleasure to see. Her writings of everyday life and her occasional photo sideshows are amazing. Her presence in mutiny gave us a lot to think about since she always wrote on topics, we had never thought of. An interesting thing, she’s written on her blog, “I blog because I get a thrill from reading a meaningful comment. Quantity is not the thing here. Even if it is just one comment, if it adds to my article, makes me see things from a different perspective I feel I have grown as a person.” There, she said it, numbers dont matter always.
Sakshi Juneja (http://sakshijuneja.com/blog/) interviewed Rakhi Sawant. Enough Said. Check out her blog. She will blow your mind. I kid you not.
Mridula Dwivedi (http://www.gonomad.com/traveltalesfromindia/) travels and travels a lot and travels way too often, its good for us she writes all of it ! Her travelogues mixed with personal experiences are grand fun to read and plus there are photos.
Pooja (http://pooja.instablogs.com/) has one of the best designed blogs I have seen. The most used tag on her blog is interestingly, health and fitness. Check it out, its something you don’t see everywhere. She also does plenty on interviews of people involved in technology.
Lotus Reads (http://lotusreads.blogspot.com/) yup thats what she calls herself - lotus reads. Lotus reads has been my one stop shop for reading about books. Sometimes after reading her post on a book, I just have to get that book. Now its my habit to search her blog for an article on the book, I intend to buy.
Annie Zaidi (http://www.anniezaidi.com/) writes about her life and writes damn well. I think that comes out from honesty with which she writes about herself and her thoughts. She is funny in a wierd sort of a way. I find it difficult to describe her blog. Her posts are sarcastic and elegant and you just got to read them.
Rashmi Bansal (http://youthcurry.blogspot.com) needs no introduction whatsoever. Her blog is indeed an insight into the Indian Youth. Probably belongs to the breed of the first few bloggers in India. She is also the lady behind JAM Magazine. She also throws spot lights into the Indian world of entertainment. Her recent post on one piece of worthless “rap” (sorry to 2pac for calling this a rap) is simply great.
Like I said, feel free to expand the list in the comments.

Hi Ujj. Thanks a lot for the mention here. I have a special fondness for Mutiny and was happy to hear from Chacko that it is India’s best non-commercial site. I hope you all go from one success to another!

Nice (and much needed) list Ujj : - )
Don’t know if these blogs deserve a mention as they’re not professional bloggers, but here you go:
Sagarika Ghose
Bhavani Iyer (who wrote films like ‘Black’ and ‘Swami’)

Thans Ujj for the list, but I think there are a whole lot more there that need to be on this list. Here are some: Neha Vishwanathan; Sujatha of Blogpourri; Anita of Mad Tea Party; rashmi bansal; uma mahadevan; jhoomur bose; meenakshi mahadevan; tarana khan, and there is a wonderful and vibrant set of bloggers who write about cooking and food and are spread all over the world and what brings them together is their passion for food. There are a lot, lot more who write wonderful posts each day that go unnoticed by us.

I find these ‘Top # something’ lists annoying..I always did and after TZP its all the more make sense to be annoyed at them.
And in the age of New media, with the number of blogs around.. no matter how many versions of list you make….you can never do justice..
But yeah a helpful list for a starter…

See this is not a top# something list Sanjukta.
Its an attempt to show my friend how little he knows about female bloggers from India and also in the process get acquainted with some other female bloggers we might not know of.
As Kamla rightly put “There are a lot, lot more who write wonderful posts each day that go unnoticed by us.” This post is expanded with the comments and so is our knowledge of some people quietly doing great stuff.

Good attempt to credit female writers.
But deep inside, from where the knowledge flows, no one is either a male or a female.
All the female writers, go deep with in and answer - Don’t you think so?
