Tolerant India or Violent India?

Just after independence day I was wondering about the number of violent incidents in India and I tried to make a list starting from Jan 2006. This is the list that I have come up with and it doesn’t look very good. I wonder why so much reliance is on violence to get the message across?

  1. Violent protest For reservations
  2. Violent protest on Saddam Execution
  3. Violent protest on Danish Cartoons
  4. Varanasi Bomb Blasts
  5. Baroda Art Gallery
  6. Taslima Nasreen attack
  7. Shiv sena attacking office of outlook
  8. Teachers beating students to death
  9. Khairlanji Massacre
  10. Viloence over Ambedkar’s Statue
  11. Naxal Killings (Bloodbath in Chattisgarh, Naxals Deliver Social Justice (1, 2 , 3) )
  12. Nandigram Violence
  13. Hindi speaking getting killed in Assam
  14. Gujjar Meena Clash in Rajasthan
  15. Dera Violence
  16. Malegaon Blasts
  17. Hyderabad Blasts
  18. Farmer Suicides and other incidents
  19. Nithari Murders and then later violent protest by villagers
  20. Singur violence
  21. Lynching of Chakrasen over a PDS shop.

Are we left with no options but resort to violent means to settle our issues? To display our opposition? To address our grievances?

Are we really a land of tolerant people as claimed by many?

    Manas,
    Yes we might find many other examples and the amazing thing is that the list is only for last 18 months.
    I wonder why do we still rely on muscle power. Is it because we can? knowing fully that we will never get prosecuted?
    I think one of the biggest reason is that of law an order in India. The lack of it makes it easier for others to go deliver instant justice or violent protests.

    Contrary to popular belief that Indians are tolerant and spiritual, the general impression reflected by these incidents is that we’re emotionally aggressive and materialistic.

    Over the years, we have grown up to the be the most intolerant lot of the world. Sad to see that the issues we have been fighting since a long time - Communalism, Racism, Casteism, Religious fundementalism, barbarism still prevail in the society. Or does this show that our media is doing their part to improve things by atleast pointing out to the issues than ever?

    hi guys,

    even i was feeling the same in the last week. we, educated at least should make the uneducated clear about the stupid facts. the people who start the problems are inside the house safe. but only those who say themselves as followers are doing this. when they get to know things clearly, i hope India’s condition will definitely improve someday!
    and happy to see people like u!
    cheers folks..!

    @2S,

    I never felt the spirituality among Indians anyway. Whoever talked about it always seemed so superficial and so full of himself.

    @Jo
    Yes the media is doing a better job but I thing the biggest problem is of law and order. If our police dept and the judiciary did their job well, so many of these incidents wouldn’t have happened.

    @Natrajan
    It is not just the uneducated, in most cases such incidents are lead by very well educated people. It is the general problem with the mindset of people and that needs to change. Nobody respects others and on top of it get offended at the drop of a hat.
