Pratibha Patil - Wrong Candidate for Wrong Reasons
Pratibha Patil who? - is UPA’s candidate for post of president, handpicked by one person, Sonia Gandhi. The day when her nomination was announced i wasn’t aware of the fact that someone with her caliber! exists which can be better than or even par with outgoing President Abdul Kalam. She was chosen ahead of, four senior-most members of current cabinet holding important portfolios, Pranab Mukherjee, Shivraj Patil, Arjun Singh and Sushil Kumar Shinde. And now we all know why she was chosen, which itself suggests how affairs are conducted in India’s political circles. To me, “She is a wrong candidate for wrong reasons”. This also reminds me how we chose HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujaral for the job of Prime Minister.
The post of president is ceremonial in India. In past president have been hand picked by congress party who served Gandhi family, starting from Varahagiri Venkata Giri, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, Giani Zail Singh and Shankar Dayal Sharma. Pratibha Patil falls in the same category.
The post has got more relevance since Venkat Raman, KR Narayanan and Abdul Kalam has chaired it. Everybody agrees across the country from seniors to children, from north to south from east to west and across the globe, that their is no better candidate then Abdul Kalam. But Sonia Gandhi with a goddess like stature in Congress Party think otherwise. This gives insights on congress party’s mindset and their approach in doing their business. If the president were elected by direct vote of the Indian people, against people like Narayan Murthy, Medha Pathkar, Amitabh Bachhan, Ratan Tata, Sunil Mittal, Sachin Tendulkar, Vishwanathn Anand or others, I bet that any of the people I have named would get more votes than Pratibha Patil. So question is how did the Congress decision-makers reject all of them and settle on her and Communists supported this? I’m confused as others to see any rational behind this decision.
Looking at previous candidates, foremost qualification is loyalty. If that’s the case then many people have left the Congress over the years; the Bharatiya Janata Party would be a shadow of itself if all ex-Congressmen left it. And if you are a Congressman, you do not have to leave the party to be disloyal. Since the present Congress is Congress (Indira), any flirtation with Congress (Organization) forty years ago would have disqualified Pratibha Patil. The loyalty required is not loyalty to the party, but to the dynasty of the party. And from Communists point of view it is the lack of achievement as they have demonstrated in Bengal, but if this is a qualification then I’m afraid to say that almost every politician would qualify for this and it would be impossible to choose a candidate.
So in a nutshell, Pratibha Patil will be a hopeless, colourless president, which suits her personality. This is not something we should worry about, as most previous presidents were no different. Varahagiri Venkata Giri, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, Giani Zail Singh and Shankar Dayal Sharma had the same qualifications as Pratibha Patil. Their stint as a president were so forgettable that Pratibha Patil cannot do worse. She has a great job; expectations are so low that she can only surprise us. The day she will sworn in, will go in history books as a blunder by congress and left and will be proven come 2009 elections.

Dear Poster,
I profoundly disagree with the content and the message of this column. I do not think the loyalty to Nehru family was the criterion behind Pratibha Patil’s selection. She is a worthy candidate who had a long and distinguished political career. I think, majority of our presidential candidate had a political background. K.R. Narayanan had a congress pedigree. This didn’t disqualify him from becoming one of the best president of our country. May be the author of the column faults them because they have the wrong politics (congress) and the politics of this poster is more than clear to the readers.
My opinion is that Kalam shouldn’t be given a second term. He should be relieved from the presdiential post and he must take up the job he is good at (as a scientist). May be he should be send to a good international research institute to train his research acumen. I also feel that he has damaged his reputation by falling prey to the nefarious design of BJP and the opportunist alliance of UNPA. His last minute flip-flop, saying he is interested in a second term if the victory is ‘certain’ is worse than the worst politicians in India. It seems, Kalam doesn’t understand that in democracy victory is never ‘certain’!
As for the comment of the author “And from Communists point of view it is the lack of achievement as they have demonstrated in Bengal, but if this is a qualification then I’m afraid to say that almost every politician would qualify for this and it would be impossible to choose a candidate.” Please make it clear then why people are choosing communists for the last thirty years? And also why there isn’t a credible opposition party in Bengal? It is also a fact the

Our constitution gives clear cut directions about electing the President. Today congress and left have got the mandate, given by the citizens of this country, to choose the Head of the State. No point in questioning the constitution or the people’s mandate.
From the formation of congress(I), they have a High command based political set up. If this whole country can vote for congress under the leadership of Sonia, how Prathiba Patil alone can find fault with her national leader or become disloyal.

i like that catch phrase; wrong candidate for the wrong reasons….I mean not supporting her is being pitched by the Congress as not supporting woman’s emancipation. Please! How lame!
And look at those pix of PP with Sonia. The president of a party protectively holds the hands of a nervous president (of a country). We dont want such an open condescemding relation between a party prez and the nominal head of the country!!!
Too much!
Yet another blunder by the dynasty. I hope it seals their fate once and for all…

It is also a fact that in Bengal, the saffron party never got a foothold. May I remind the author that the sangh parivar and its political front BJP only thrives in the wilderness of illiteracy and pseudo nationalism of the northern political landscape of India. If India got a future, it wouldn’t be never realized through the corrupt and decadent political party, BJP.
“So in a nutshell, Pratibha Patil will be a hopeless, colourless president, which suits her personality.” Let us desist from the author’s bleak dismissal of Pratibha Patil and judge her from her actions. She will be our ‘first woman president’ and that will send out right signal to the whole world.

congress is the cause of the backwardness and incompetence of india in every arena.it is run by evil people looking to play caste based politics and dividing the country instead of uniting it.all congressians are bastards and pratibha patil is also one of them.she is one power hungry bitch, as displayed by her from the first day her name popped up.she is indeed handpicked up by the greatest bitch of them all, “sonia gandhi”. pratibha patil as the president will ensure that no one argues with the bills passed by the fucked up parliament full of congress and its allies.india is doomed under congress.

sujit,
you sound like a commie. tell me are you on crack 24/7 or something? which century are you living in? it seems that you are relating the “100% literacy” of Kerela and so-called “intellectual vibrancy” of WB with commie electoral sucess in these states.
Let me remind you that constitutionally, vote of every individual is equal whether he/she is a PhD forom IIT or and anpadh gawaar. SO shove your commie idea back into your sorry marxist brain.
As far as corruption and decdency of BJP is concerned one just has to compare the two commie heartlands with two more capitalistic ones i.e. Punjab and Gujarat.
So comrade sujit repeat after me. Kiski sarkaar hai PAnjab aur Gujaraat mein?
Beeeeeeeee…………JAaaaaaaaaaaayyy……Peeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

If the MPs of the BJP are good only at doing human trafficking and accepting bribes for even speaking inside the parliament, what is the moral standards and value system of a BJP supporter? Simply shouting Jai Jai … reflects anything???

You put all the bad words on Sujith for supporting impractical communism. At least they have a philosophy to state you impractical. What BJP has got? Their Dubious stand on Hinduism and Hindu rashtra? or the what we saw in Gujarat a few years back? Or what we see the ‘ethical’ activities of BJP MPs? Or if it is their fascism. I don’t even have t ask the question ‘which century are you living in’?

Take a break - visualize the working of the nations in our world. Remember two things - “as you sow, so you will reap,” and “every action has reaction.” It is sad to see how individual’s selfish motives destroy the fabric of society. Let the (FUTURE) HISTORY in the making be the guide. People are very resilient and responsible - no one has right to dictate their future.

Well written article.
@Sujith n Jyothis
I feel bad for people who use internet but can not use their brains!
The comments like “saffron party” n “Dubious stand on Hinduism and Hindu rashtra” and what more have we got? I would only point that if knighting of Rushdie can start flares in some countries, if Sonia’s patriotism question can start voilence, then why MF Hussain’s art on bhart mata should not creat controversy? When that question is raised, people say “communal party”. If people can change the face of our godess to Sonia ‘gandhi’ (dirty), why can’t they depict her like mother Mary or Rajiv to Jesus Christ? Oh.. it will create voilence and hurt the vote bank!! where as, if someone hurts ’saffron religion’, its tolerable, since they have been tolerating these kind of things since ages. if they try to shout, they are ‘communal’.
If you have the courage to call someone a ’saffronist’, have the same courage to say similar words to our dear neighbor’s ‘moral police’. Lets see who survives!
Coming to the question of crores of people willfully electing the leaders and democracy, my friends havent seen the darker side of last minute liquor flow and gifts distribution in a desperate attempt to lure the voters. and you talk about fair elections. Why some party has not been able to make it to some states or constituencies is because they are not able to put forth a candidate of ‘equal caliber’ (with matching criminal history?) against the stupid communists.

It may be a few generations before we’ll have political

We want thoroughly nationalist, well-educated and articulate Hindu leaders whose driving passion should be:

Please dont compare Pratibha Patil with Ex presidents like VV Giri. VV Giri contested as an Independent. He won because of cross voting against Indira Gandhi’s wishes. He was not the congress candidate.
He has done a lot for the Labour Union in India, and he certainly is not a lame duck like Pratibha Patil.
And yeah it surely is very sad that congress has selected Pratibha Patil over Kalam, only because of Caste considerations.

In response to Vivek, Count and Jyothis,
Thanks for the support Jyothis. The point here, is not the practicability of communism or the related philosophical questions, which we must discuss on some other occasions.
What I want to highlight is the rabid intolerance of hindu fanatics and the politics of hatred they preach. I fully agree with Jyothis that the political ideology BJP represents is the most ugliest, fascist and monolithic doctrine of all time.
What we saw in Gujarath under Modi government is a shame to the whole of humanity. The ethnic cleansing carried out by sangh parivar under the leadership of Narendra Modi would make even the israelis or serbs pale into insignificance.
The latest addition to this doctrine of intolerance is the suspension of Sivaji Panikar from the deanship of MS university for refusing to close down an arts exhibition for its allegedly negative portrayal of hindu godesses. If that wasn’t enough, sanghis got the student arrested. I wonder, in what century these obscurantists live? May be this isn’t surprising when considering that these fools also advocate drinking cow’s urine! It seems sanghis haven’t come of age!
It is also surprising to see that many of the commentators swear and use abusing language. I think, it reveals the hatred these hindu fanatics harbor. We don’t need reminding that these same fanatics murdered our rashtrapitha, the apostle of peace.
@vivek, since you yourself qualify your comment as ‘rant’, I do not have to add anything to it.

First of all: Please use this place for constructive arguments, no personal comments or degrading comments, those comments will be moderated.
It is good to see that this issue generates so much passion from across the globe with different ideologies.
Sujith and Jyothi don’t agree with me and have raised their concerns.
I have this to say to you and others.
Congress party didn’t choose Pratibah because they wanted a first women president. They chose because they couldn’t settle on 4 male heavy weights (not any more) and were in the end were looking for a exit strategy to defeat Shekhawat that’s why they went to Rajasthan. If they would be serious about women president I bet that there are better candidates than her, not to mention congress was interested in filing Mohsina Kidwai, but that fell apart. If congress was so serious about first women president than why did they go for others? Communists and DMK supported her only because they wanted Vice president post for themselves as now evident from press reports. Mayawati supported her so that her Taj Corridor case can go under wraps, its not a surprise that Governor didn’t allow to prosecutor her within few day of meeting Sonia Gandhi.
My simple point is that their selection process is flawed and it is jut sheer politics which is looking after their party men and in that process they have chosen a wrong candidate which is not worthy of this post by any means.
Also congresses is claiming that Kalam should resgin and keep the highest office out of politics. This is sheer hypocrisy on their behalf and communists, because they
chose a candidate in first place to for political reasons. They are also asking BJP/NDA for a consensus, but to get a consensus on a person, all parties should have discussed and then released a candidates name, that’s how it happened in the past for this post. Congress hasn’t followed this. They just consulted their allies (winning targets) and told the nation a name out of a blue and asked others to support. This is not way to make consensus for the highest post. Which suggests that they are not interested in consensus, because they don’t care about others because they can win on no’s. This has never happened before for this post at least.
I think its a good idea to have a women in the highest post no denying that, but simple point is Congress and Left have polluted the dignity of highest office by playing politicsa and doing deals to get their candidate. If people cant see this through then I’m afraid I cant help you, it is said for a country like India.
On the fact that we are criticizing Pratibha before she has even occupied the chair, I will say this I’m not criticizing her yet, I’m questioning the rational of picking her for the post. As far her activates are concerned, they say history makes the present and present makes the future. In her 40 years of public life there are not much to relish or cheer about her contribution to the nation, which is why I suggested she would be mere rubber stamp and colorless president. On her future I cant comment but I can say this if someone has adapted a habit for her lifetime (for 40 yrs) it will be very hard to change in the last leg of your life.
@Sujith - you mentioned that Communist have been chosen for last 30 years in Bengal. I say this to you if this is your barometer of measuring the success of a sate or a nation then you might need to rethink your thought process. WB is now going trough industrialization, after realizing that 30 years have just done harm to the sate and is no where on the national map. As someone pointed if you want to measure the sate i say look at Gujarat, leaving one accident apart of Godhra, they are doing great.

What signal will we send by electing a woman prez? It’s an illustrious or an intellectual prez who’s gonna send the right signals. We tell the world that only the right persons are chosen for the right job. What are you going to tell the world by electing a woman prez? Do you tell them that in our country women are a disadvantaged lot and so we elected them for the top post?

I don’t recall the specifics of this story. It
goes back a number of years. An Indian lady
educated and and accomplished had lived in
Italy for some 20 years and become an Italian
citizen.
She wanted to run for the city council or the
mayor of her town or similar political office.
The opposition from the locals was so fierce
and humiliating that she had to withdraw.
Now look at the behavior of the Congress party.
An Italian charwoman who does not even have a
high school diploma has been elevated to the
position of party president by the oldest
political party in the subcontinent. A billion
shudras have taken to calling her super PM.
There’s something seriously wrong with the men
in our country some of whom are posting here.
Solution: Dump idli sambar, rice and chutney.
Switch to beef. And gorge lots of it.
When the last pope died, the turbanwallah who
occupies the chair of PM declared three days
of mourning and ordered the tricolor flown
half-mast at all government buildings. Not
even steadfast Catholic countries like Spain
and Ireland did any such thing.
Where in the world would you find coolies and
shudras like these people? The answer is
nowhere. Only in India.
There was a news story just a day ago that
schoolchildren in the town of Hubli in
Karnataka were praying for the safe return of
astronaut Sunita Williams. Ms. Williams is not
an Indian. She’s not an Indian-American. She’s
biracial. Her mother is Ukrainian. She grew
up in the USA. Her husband is an American.
Her father who’s from India called her
“India’s Daughter”. You may wonder why he said
that. He probably thought a billion coolies
like himself would turn out to greet her when
she supposedly visits India with her family
shortly.
A proud race of people does not behave this way.

Some one named Jyothis seems to be quite ignorant of politics the dirty one we are witnessing in congress party. I have some questions for Jyothis.
Are you aware of how many in India are below poverty line? About 100 cores. Why because congress party ruled India for 50 years. Persons like you with eyes blinded by a shield are keeping away from reality and harping on a party which wrongfully takes credit of India’s Independence as their own work. The congress party considers India as its Jagir and cannot see any one else rule the country. Congress today is worst and shamefully criminal in putting many serious criminals in politics, made them ministers for a very dastardly desire of gaining power. Congress has never helped poor and always lived in a raj complementary of British Empire.
Jyothis. Tell me why dynasty rules? Are you a fancy of this? Do you want only Sonia and his Children to run the country? What will be fate of congress party without Dynastic family? Isn’t the congress party a lame who needs the sticks of Sonia Gandhi?
Can you tell me what dynasty has given to India and taken back in Return? Today the dynasty enjoys acres of many bungalows at the cost of Government, most corrupt congress party who siphoned off tens of thousands of cores of rupees into their banks abroad. Innumerous properties & shares in many companies benami. This is a fact. Do you support this? This loot has been going on for last 60 years in the name of giving Independence to the poor illiterates. Country needs a Krishna whose incarnation can only bring India out of the Devils of congress party. Some day which is not very far this will end when the illiterates of India become aware of these cheats. When this will end then only the public in India will prosper and true independence is welcomed. Time has come that the Indian Saddam Hussein has to go for ever.

well guys, this is an interesting article. And after going through the list of comments I can say, its very simple to deviate Indian people from the actual goal, by introducing an element of emotion. Friends we need to grow up, tell me how many here want India to grow and prosper? I would guess atleast more than 90% of the viewers here.
And what should our goal be: president office should not be misused. It doesn’t matter whether Kalam is President or Patil. Since the power they have in their hand is insignificant. But yes the visibility of such position is very vast, and thus it gives the position an indirect power through media and other similar channels.
As a citizen, instead of fighting for congress or BJP or Left, we should work together for betterment of society and social atmosphere in which we live.
You know if you say thousand or million times for piece of stone to move from its place, it will never doesn’t matter how many years go by. We have to go and act to move it. And till now the action comes from only these not so good or whom people say evil, “POLITICIANS”. Guys understand getting into politics is not a simple thing you will have to put your career, your future your family life on stake. Do not criticize these guys instead act enter into politics. Current youths like you when entered into IT it started booming, you entered into BPO it’s booming, enter into Politics and make it boom, make it glow.
Friends, try to analyze its of no use criticizing or praising any and hope they will do good for you. No, you have to getup and act. If you want India your way then act, and don’t hope, don’t dream. Make a plan, influence people around you to support your plan and then act on it. If you want India to be prosperous within your lifespan then act and act sooner then later.
You can start your action from anything, you have got wonderful mind, the genes of our great grandfathers so think and I am very sure you are much better than the people in Congress or BJP or Left or whetever, come up with good solutions to the problem we currently have, start with taking a small problem near you, which may be as obvious as cleaning the place and nearby area where you live to educating those street kids which are going to represent India when you will be old. And make a small simple plan to solve these problems and execute it.
Friends start seeing things from top and with a detached feeling to remain rationale, see the goal, ask yourself what are you gaining in unnecessary arguments and creating negative energy. Instead cooperate each other and begin doing something better.
