Can Pratibha Patil become India’s First Woman President?

India's First Woman President?

Just like the way I had expected, a surprise candidate for the country’s top post.

After the names of the Big B, and Mr Murthy, it’s a card that all political parties want to play.

UPA has nominated Pratibha Patil, the present Governor of Rajasthan, as its Presidential candidate. Numerically speaking, considering the support that the UPA has from UP CM Mayawati, and its own strength, and more importantly the Left, Pratibha Patil can become India’s First Woman President

Well, there are two aspects of this that’s debated in the media, one is the Rise of the Woman, wherein you have Sonia Gandhi, who controls not just the Congress, but has a load control over the functioning of the Govt, and you have Mayawati, Vasundhara Raje, etc all over, and now a woman over the President’s post

And the other, is the news that flies that Sonia will have better control on both the PM and President, fair enough are elections in India. Why aren’t Presidential Polls conducted through a general ballot, so that you and I can vote?

As for the credentials of Patil (not Shivraj Patil), I learn from IBNLive.com that,

  • Patil was the first woman president of the Congress in Maharashtra,
  • Handled several ministries and served as the Leader of Opposition in that state,
  • Was the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha in 1986-1988 and is the
  • First woman governor of Rajasthan,
  • Was Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly when Sharad Pawar, as the head of Purogami Lok Dal, became Maharshtra Chief Minister in July 1979.
  • Patil was a table tennis champion during her college days,
  • She has been involved in the cooperative movement in Maharashtra,
  • She also set up an industrial training school for the blind besides starting sewing classes for poor and needy women, hostels for girls, an engineering college, sugar factory etc.

And read this,

…she refused to sign the controversial Rajasthan Freedom of Religion Bill that banned religious conversions. She argued that it contained provisions that directly or indirectly affected fundamental rights related to religious freedom.

Is cross voting does not happen, amongst party members, and if the second choice amongst NDA does not turn out to be Mr. Shekhawat, then India, could well have its First Woman Preisident, in its 60th year of Independence. Well that’s how the Congress is marketing it.

The President’s role is largely ceremonial, no need to waste money by conducting general elections for it.

She is chosen for wrong reasons, and when you do that you know that outcome will be not effective.
If they wanted women why not Najma Heptullah, she is an ex congress and now with NDA, but congress wont do that. I’m sure their are far better candidates then her, but in India if Deve Gowda, Gujaral can become PM for wrong reasons than let it be.

Sonia Gandhi hasn’t shown any maturity or PM (who is a just puppet in his capacity) by choosing her
    Kalam , Venkatraman.
Why not pick T N Seshan, or other guys who are passionate about Nation.

Thats why Mera Bharat Mahan Hia..

Earlier no one used to take interest in presidential elections. They were meant to be puppets anyway. Only after we have had Kalam and we have experienced what it is like to have a good president and so everyone is concerned. With Mme Patil, it is back to RV,Z Singh days.

We have overpopulation. But we don’t have an
abundance of good leaders in politics. We don’t
have hundreds of men and women around the country
any of whom could step in and run the office of
PM or President at a moment’s notice. Under the
present circumstances, we should elect or appoint
some of the best leaders we have and let them
    serve without term limits.

Two star leaders on the national scene right now
    are:

    Narendra Modi: PM for life

    Arun Shourie: President for life
