President Murthy

Narayana MurthyToday, Sonia Gandhi will meet with Karunanidhi to discuss who the next President of our Republic should be. Unfortunately, as citizens, we have no say in the matter. A handful of political leaders will decide over coffee and ladoos who it’s going to be. I wish the President was elected by direct ballot, it would have been so much fun. Perhaps then Indians like me who live outside the country could vote.

Although I like President Kalam, I would really like to see Narayana Murthy as President. I have a firm belief that he would do something as President. He won’t just exist inside the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he would be more proactive.

He delivered this pre-commencement lecture at the New York University (Stern School of Business) on May 9.

A very interesting read.

Murthy was being considered as a candidate but I think the faux pas he made regarding the Indian national anthem recently has discredited him. I personally don’t think it matters that he preferred the instrumental version of the anthem over the actual one, but the incident was blown out of proportion and made out Murthy to be ani-national. At the worst he maybe he was a little too eager to please his foreign visitors (I would never have done what he did) but I do not think his behavior was anti-national. I have great respect for Mr. Murthy, but after this incident I wonder whether he could be President. I feel a President needs to have very strong nationalist feelings. You have to represent the country and Murthy didn’t do it too well by trying to please foreigners.
We Indians are very sensitive about our flag and national anthem.
However, inspite of all this, I feel Murthy is the best candidate, after Kalam.

I would say do not mix politics with business/businessmen. If they couldn’t do anything for the country without being involved in the government or political system they wouldn’t be able to do anything better if they are given presidentship or whatever.

I’m just imagining Bill Gates as the president of the USA.!
